This is Travis from the first Grand Theft Auto.  While multiple protagonists are available, Travis is the sometimes assumed main character as he is the first character available in the menu upon first run after install.  He’s also a very obvious reference to Robert De Niro’s character Travis Bickle from the film Taxi Driver.  Since GTA has always been 5 parts anarchism and 5 parts organized crime, it’s fitting to call this character Travis Conway as another obvious tie to De Niro’s character Jimmy Conway from Scorsese’s Goodfellas.

Something about this character was so oddly lovable.  All the games were good, but this was the game that actually made you start to care deeply about the future of the character and his life of relatively successful and somewhat justified crime.  This is Tommy Vercetti from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Claude, as he’s referred to eventually, is the protagonist from Grand Theft Auto III.  The protagonist from GTA2 was also called Claude with the given last name Speed.  It is known in the second game that the main character is young, possibly a teenager, so it’s likely speed was an alias rather than an actual last name.  Upon conjecture, assuming the character as the same in both games due to visual similarities, we’ve decided to call him Claude “Speed” Dean due to the very obvious similarity in appearance of Claude from GTA III and the well-known hollywood actor James Dean.

Why, who is this?  It’s CJ from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas!  Carl Johnson took on whatever appearance you desired in the storyline of the game, but every game started out with the same skinny generic Carl.
